An Annual Report By Dave Ratzlow
Friends:
Here are a few lists of my favorite music of 2015. If you have Spotify, you can also listen to an extended playlist linked here (or with the ebedded playlist at the bottom of this page): Let me know what you think. Keep rocking, |

TOP DOZEN FAVORITE ALBUMS OF THE YEAR
12. | ![]() |
RAURY - All We Need
I called Raury "the future of music" a few months ago on my Twitter page. Even if this ends up being his only album (I certainly hope not), the genre fusions and politically-tinged lyrics on this album showcase where the most vital new music is headed. |
|||
11. | ![]() |
NATALIE PRASS - Natalie Prass
Intelligent and catchy songwriting, emotional performances and meticulous production is always winning. |
|||
10. | ![]() |
NADINE SHAH - Fast Food
Smokey and smoking! |
|||
9. | ![]() |
GABRIEL RIOS - This Marauder’s Midnight
Released slowly over the course of 2014 this album presents the stripped down sound that made me swoon when I first heard him and his band do an acoustic set at a house concert. |
|||
8. | ![]() |
DERADOORIAN - The Expanding Flower Planet
If you make something a little bit sweet and kind of odd with a bit of a groove to it, I’ll probably like it. This debut album from a former member of Dirty Projectors instantly appealed to me. |
|||
7. | ![]() |
THIS IS THE KIT - Bashed Out
I put this album on a big Spotify playlist earlier this year and whenever these confident yet delicate songs came up in the shuffle I had to stop whatever I was doing and listen. |
|||
6. | ![]() |
SOKO - My Dreams Dictate My Reality
Soko is making all of your 80s retro dreams come true. Is this record from 2015 or 1983? |
|||
5. | ![]() |
NATALIA LAFOURCADE - Hasta la Raíz
This epic yet intimate suite of songs, especially this track (MY FAVORITE SONG OF THE YEAR!), always makes me tear up a bit, even though mi español es muy malo ahora, and I only vaguely know what she's singing about. |
|||
4. | ![]() |
MODEST MOUSE - Strangers To Ourselves
These guys have been around for a long time. Glad to hear they're getting even stranger not more generic like some other famous bands who've been around a long time. |
|||
3. | ![]() |
ALABAMA SHAKES - Sound & Color
These little descriptive sentences of mine are useless when describing the raw and electric power of albums like this one. |
|||
2. | ![]() |
THE DØ - Shake, Shook, Shaken
Some pop music is so delicious, it almost hurts. But I'm still trying to figure out why this kind of pop hurts so good and almost everything on the Billboard Top 10 fails to even register. |
|||
1. | ![]() |
AMASON - Sky City
Once again, a Scandinavian group tops my favorites list. You might have noticed that they were on my "Ones To Watch" list last year, so this album has been on my radar all year. Catchy melodies, lush productions but most importantly, I'm all about these voices. Sweet and raspy, mellow and passionate at the same time, I don't know how they do it, but I love it. |

SPECIAL MENTIONS | |||||

BONOBONOBONOBO - Love Songs for the Rest of Us
There's always room for more love songs. These smart, original and glorious new songs, by some dear friends, investigate the complexities of modern sex, relationships, love, and families of all kinds. The first music video is coming soon! |
||||

BAEB RXXTH - "Gutter"
This song points to thrilling things to come from this funky new project by Nasimiyu, who put out my favorite song of 2014. |

BEST ALL-SINGING INTERVIEW SHOW |

THE SINGING SHOW In the fall I debuted my web series, "The Singing Show," likely the only all-singing interview show in the world, ever. It's been super fun and there's more to come. Thanks to all my guests! |

BEST DEBUT MUSIC VIDEO FEATURING STAR WARS ACTION FIGURES |
|||||
THE RATZLOW - “I Hope That's Okay” (aka "If Love Is War...") To coincide with the release of the new Star Wars movie and also to celebrate the 10th anniversary of my debut album, Silly Love Songs, I created this action figure-packed music video (my first!). |
|||||
LOVELIEST MUSIC VIDEO |

JOANNA NEWSOM - “Divers” I'm never totally sure what she's singing about, but the loveliness of this music video and the lush genius of her music cannot be denied. |
|||||
BEST TAYLOR SWIFT PARODY FOR A GOOD CAUSE |
|||||
MONICA HUNKEN et al - "Break The TPP" I helped out on this video aimed to draw attention to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pretty horrible trade deal that our government is excited about for the worst reasons. Read more about it here: www.exposethetpp.org |
